Green ash: prefers moist areas, fairly drought resistant.
Single leaf or dwarf ash: one leaflet per leaf, small shrub like tree, found along streams or where moisture collects.
velvet or modesto ash: does well in wet or alkaline soils. rough fissured bark, found in canyons towards extreme south utah.
Douglas Fir:
Rocky mountain Juniper: red bark color, blue green color leaves, central beam with a cone shape structure of tree
Utah Juniper: grey bark color: bright green color leaves, multiple trunks, irregular growth habit
box elder maple: leaves opposite, thin brown grey bark, sometimes 3 lobed at base
canyon maple: grey brown bark, wide leaf structure, 3-5 lobed
Rocky mountain maple: red brown bar, thin fairly smooth bark, 3-5 lobed
Norway maple: smooth grey brown on younger, furrowed on older, similar to sugar maple, little in US
gamble oak: 7 to 9 rounded lobes, grey-brown bark - platey can be ridged, shorter tree structure
shrub oak: small spiny leaf, grey brown bark, southern utah shrub like
wavyleaf oak: southern utah, gray rough bark, dark green, elongated leaf structure. small and shrubby
bristlecone pine: needles in groups of 5, shorter pines 1in, dark green color, pinecones are thick with bristles at the end.
limber pine: needles in groups of 5, longer pines 3in, dark green color, short stocked pinecones, rounded no points on seeds.
lodgepole pine: needles in groups of 2, longer 1-3 in, pinecone has little to no stock, spiny on tips.
pinyon pine: needles in groups of 2, 1 - 2in, pinecone is small round structure
ponderosa pine: needles in groups of 2 or 3, 3 - 10 in, pinecone 3 - 6in, brown to red color in older trees, vanilla smell on inner bark.
singleleaf pine: needles are single along the twig, similar to pinyon pine.
