How did allied governments encourage men to enlist for the war?

A

They told them that the war would be safe, have hardly any fighting, a “good lark”, and over by Christmas.

Obviously the reality of war was very different.

A

Solders were expected to carry all of their equipment with them at all times. They were supposed to keep it clean and in good condition as well.

A

Disease. Dysentery, typhus, and cholera led to fungal conditions such as trench foot.

A

Wet, dirty conditions led to trench foot/mouth

Conditions for soldiers:

A

Trench foot/mouth, very unsanitary

Rats (the size of rabbits) fed on the dead whose body parts were scattered by shells in the quicksand of no-man’s land

After a month at the front soldiers went to the rear to bathe & eat good food

After effects (mental) of the war

A

Shell-shock, otherwise known as PTSD led soldiers to have severe nervous breakdowns, fidget, walk oddly, etc.

A

The area between the enemy trenches full of barbed wire entanglements & land mines.
