What was barbed wire?

A

Tangled wire to stop the enemy getting into the trench as it was difficult to go past but easy to get tangled up in. It also meant that the enemy could not see where to shoot and it was extremely hard to shoot through.

What was the ammunition shelf?

A

It was a small shelf built into the side of the trench. It was used to store bullets and was beside a periscope.

What was a periscope?

A

It was a box tube with holes at either ends. A mirror on this allowed a reflection of the enemy’s movements.

What was the sandbags/the parapet?

A

It was a low wall made of earth and sandbags used for extra protection against bullets. They were common in especially rocky and wet areas.

What was the firing step?

A

It was a piece of wood at the side of the trench to allow the soldiers to fire at the enemy. They needed this piece of wood to help them as the trenches were dug deep so the soldiers could stand up. For safety reasons, this was only used at night.

What was the dugout?

A

The dugout was a hole at the side of the wall where soldiers would eat, sleep rest and look after their weapons. The officers had better dugouts, often small rooms dug deeper into the ground.

What was the sump?

A

It was a channel dug at the bottom of the trench which acted as a drain for water.

What was the duckboard?

A

It was a plank of wood at the bottom of the trench which made it easier to move through mud.
