What is an An-Ion?
Larger, Non-metals, Negative
What is a Cat-Ion?
Smaller, Metals, Positive
What is Ionization?
The process of removing an electron, which then creates an Ion. It moves in a POSITIVE direction.
What is Electro-Negativity?
The ability of an atom to add - or attract electrons - from another compound
What is Electron-Affinity?
An atom wanting to gain electrons. It moves in a NEGATIVE direction.
What are the exceptions for Electron Affinity?
Element BEFORE. Half full/Full shell. Next to each other.
What are the exceptions for Ionization?
Element AFTER. Half full/Full shell. Next to each other.
What does ZEFF stand for?
Z = atomic number. EFF = effective nuclear charge. It is used for finding the balanced electrons. The higher the ZEFF the smaller the atomic or ionic radii.
What is the equation to find a ZEFF?
ZEFF = Z (element) - S (inner electrons)
What is Electro-Negativity?
The ability of an atom to bond - or attract - electrons from another compound
