2 Trichomonas vaginalis
• Urogenital system (of females and males).
Trophozoite (no cyst stage): causes the disease and infective stage
- Sexual intercourse: main method.
- Contact with contaminated underwear
towels and toilets.
- From mother to fetus during delivery> neonatal trichomoniasis
Disease: trichomoniasis (in females also called Trichomonas vaginitis)
Asympto matic trichomoniasis: in about half of females and most males.
> Symptomatic trichomoniasis:
In females: causes vaginitis (severe vaginal pruritus and dysuria with a frothy
purulent and foul-smelling vaginal discharge).
In males: usually asymptomatic
but can cause prostatitis and urethritis.
- Examination of urogenital specimens (vaginal discharge
urethral discharge or
urine) to detect trophozoites: directly or after culture
2. Antigen detection in urogenital specimens (.e.g.
using RDTs)
- Molecular dagnosis. (to detect parasite’s DNA ): not routinely done.
