Trigeminal nerve Flashcards
What are the section of the trigeminal nerve
Opthalmic nerve V1
Maxillary nerve V2
Mandibular nerve V3
What are the branches of the opthalmic nerve
Supraorbital
Supratrochlear
Lacrimal
Infratrochlear
External nasal
What are the branches of the maxillary nerve
Zygomaticotemporal
Zygomaticofacial
Infra-orbital
What are the branches of the mandibular nerve
Auriculotemporal
Buccal
Mental
What are the exit points of the branches of the trigeminal nerve from the skull
Supra-orbital notch (foramen)
Infra-orbital foramen
Mental foramen
What bones make up the hard palate
Palatine process of maxilla (front)
Horizontal plate of palatine bone (back)
What foramens are present in the hard palate
Incisive foramen (behind upper incisors)
Greater palatine foramen (bilateral beside upper 7s)
Lesser palatine foramen (bilateral behind the greater palatine foramens)
What nuclei does the trigeminal nerve stem from
Special Visceral Efferent from the motor nucleus in the pons to the muscles of mastication
General Somatic Afferent to the mesencephalic, chief sensory & spinal nuclei in the midbrain, pons & medulla oblongata
What type of innervation does the trigeminal nerve provide
Supply general somatic sensation to most of the face, head & associated orbital, nasal & oral cavities
The mandibular division also contains the motor root for the muscles of mastication
Where is the trigeminal ganglion
In meckel’s cave at the apex of the petrous temporal bone
What brain matter does the trigeminal ganglion lie within
Dura matter
When all 3 divisions of the trigeminal nerve are affected where is the site of the lesion
The pons (stroke) or at the cranial base (trauma or tumour)
Where do the divisions of the trigeminal nerve leave the brain
V1 - superior orbital fissure
V2 - foramen rotundum
V3 - foramen ovale
What would be evident if the divisions of the trigeminal nerve were affected in the cavernous sinus
There is usually evidence of an effect on other nerves too (CN3 and CN4
What does the frontal nerve divide into
Suprorbital nerve
Supratrochlear nerve
Where is the lacrimal gland
Sits behind upper eyelid
What nerves supply the vertex, forhead and upper eyelids
Supra-orbital, supratrochlear and lacrimal
What does the infratrochlear nerve supply
The skin at the medial angle of the eye and adjacent root of nose
What supplies the tip of the nose
The external nasal branch of the anterior ethmoidal branch of the V1
What would shingles at the tip of the nose indicate
That the disease may also develop on the cornea
WHY - As the branches of CN V1 supply the skin of the upper eyelid, they also supply the underlying conjunctiva both on the eyelid & over the cornea
What does the ethmoidal nerve supply
The ethmoidal sinuses, lateral wall of nasal cavity and nasal septum
Where is the pterygopalatine fossa
lies just lateral to the upper aspect of the nasal cavity & nasopharynx behind the orbit & above the hard/soft palate
What anatomical landmarks suround the pterygopalatine fossa
Temporal fossa
Infratemporal fossa
Inferior orbital fissure
What areas does the V2 nerve provide sensory innervation for
Middle face
Palate
Sinuses
Nasopharynx
Nose
