Rainforest’s are very productive
NPP high of 2200g/m2/yr
How many tree species per hector?

Problems with deforestation?
Loss of biomass Soil only regains fertility after 20 years High soil erosion rates Increased number of landslides Increased chance of flooding
Trees
Flexible trunks - allow movement
Thin back - don’t need warmth
Buttress roots
Wide spread roots - nutrients in top layer
Emerge 3m above ground - anchors, supports and stabilises trees

Lianas - grow upwards, and start at ground level, live in dark conditions.
Strangle figs - steals tree nutrients, grows downwards
Decomposition
Decomposes - help break down organisms to add soil and nutrients.
Fungi, worms like warm conditions
Animals
African forest - small in size and tusks straight to allow greater movement.
Probiscus monkeys - loud noises when in danger, and unique digestive system so can just eat leaves
