What does the shrub layer (bottom layer) of the rainforest do?

A

Supports only a few plants because the canopy of branches above cuts out light. The rest of the forest floor is consequently sparsely populated with tiny seedlings and shrubs.

What does the under canopy do?

A

It’s the densest layer where the trees prevent light reaching the plants below.
-Only 2% of sunlight penetrates the middle canopy to the forest floor

A

The trees here can reach 35m. The trees are uneven with breaks between treetops allowing sunlight through.

•Provides water store for indigenous people
-1.6 billions rely on the forest for products
•Prevention of flooding due to interception, evaporation and absorption
•It’s home to many species and food supplies for animals and people
-2/3 of plant species are found here
