tropical rainforest ecosystem cs Flashcards
(12 cards)
what is the tropical rainforest ecosystem I have studied and where is it located
Papa New Guinea- located between 0 degrees and 12 degrees south of the equator
how much of the island does the rainforest cover
75%
how many species of mammal and plant is the rainforest home to
200 species of mammal, 20,000 species of plant
name 2 species the rainforest is home to
monitor lizard and the buff-faced pygymy parrot (worlds smallest parrot)
what is the name of the indigenous people who live here
Maisin people
why do Maisin people need the forest
shifting cultivation (slash and burn), material for houses, canoes and hunting for food
explain the reason as to why Papa New Guinea is facing problems
The Papa New Guinean constitution states that Maisin people own the traditional lands however in the last 20 years large scale logging companies have posed a threat
explain the Kiunga-Aiambak road project and its impact
It was located in Maisin forests and intended to improve communications and provide benefits to local people but between 1995 sonf 2002 over 600,000 sq m of logs worth $60 million were exported to Japan and China yet no road was built. This lead to a loss of biodiversity, loss of clean water supply through sedimentation, increase spread of disease from increased contact with timber cutters and ecological change from deforestation
explain how palm oil exploitation has caused problems for Maisin people and its impact
most palm oil plantations are not to create edible oil for local communities but to export, during forest clearance for these plantations sedimentation and eutrophication has been caused due to soil erosion, pesticides and fertilisers have threatened the Sissano lagoon killing the coral reef and threatening prawn and fishing industries
name 2 solutions that have been put in place to help Papa New Guinea
Kutubu Petroleum Development Project and the World Wide Fund for Nature
explain the Kutubu Petroleum Development Project
flow lines bring hydrocarbons to a central production facility which are transported along a 264km pipeline which is buried underground to reduce spills, waste has been managed and road construction minimised
explain the world wide fund for nature
long term strategy to ensure economic and environmental viability, the areas of focus include: conducting extensive biodiversity surveys, raising community awareness of long term impacts of industrial scale logging, helping local villagers develop sustainable fishing and establishing environmentally friendly local businesses, train healthcare workers on malaria control and sanitation
