tropical rainforests Flashcards
(17 cards)
name 2 plant adaptations
buttress roots and drip tip leaves
name 3 animal adaptations
poisson dart drog, squirrel monkey, glass frog.
name some plant adaptations in a deciduous woodland
bluebells flower early, leaves are broader, branches spread out horizontally
name some animal adaptations in a deciduous woodland
aninals hibernate in the winter and lower metabolism to conserve energy and not look for food, since its harder in winter, they migrate during cold seasons, squireels bury food to survive winter
give a few services of a tropical rainforest
carbon capture (2 billion tonnes), tourism, maintains biodiversity -> optimum conditions which allows a range of organisms to live there
give a few goods of a tropical rainforest
drugs (rosy periwinkle- treats childhood leukaemia), food for indigenous people, oxygen and timber
give a few services of a deciduous woodland
recreation (cycling, nature walks) and conservation -> helps preserve rare plants and animal species by replanting trees, protecting habitats.
give a few goods of a deciduous woodland
timber (13 million tonnes) 2014, fuel- biomass is burnt e.g air-dried wood for burning stoves
what is the case study for tropical rainforests and deciduous woodlands
madagascar (trf) and new forest woodland (dw)
explain tavy / slash and burn
trees are cut down, then burnt. when they are burnt, they leave behind ash containing nutrients. this nutrients Is left to be added to the soil, making it more fertile, acting as a natural fertiliser which helps crops grow. but, these nutrients/minerals/ions are easily washed away due to the rainfall in a tropical rainforest. therefore, the whole process must be done again
why was logging done in Madagascar? and give some reasons for illegal logging
it was don so Madagascan government could sell timber for money to pay offf international debts. then, illegal -> corruption (police allowed it for money) , magascan people are poor, high demand for rosewood (fragrant)
why is there deforestation in trfs?
tavy, increased population and logging (illegal/legal)
why is there deforestation in dw?
widen carriageways (congestion), ups population increased from 52.4 million to 64.1 million-> houses,
how is the new forest woodland being managed sustainably? (what are they doing to manage is sustainably)
pesticide and herbicide use is limited, when coniferous trees are chopped down, they are replaced by native deciduous trees, forestry is controlled by the forestry commission
how is the new forest being used sustanably? - how is it being used sensibly?
paths have been made which direct visitors away from vulnerable areas, protecting the wildlife- stops footpath erosion, leaflets have been made ‘5 ways to love the forest’ -> educates visitor on why to drive slowly, government schemes - grants can be given to local landowners by using techniques such as coppicing to manage tree growth & plant native species
what is coppicing?
cutting trees just at ground level or above the root so they can still grow easily
how is Madagascar being managed sustainably?
farmers have agreed to set aside an area where young trees can grow without being cut- more trees and they help improve the soil. schools have been set up, educating children on why they should care for the turf. ecotourism -> locals have created a group of guides to take tourists around the reserve, this money also pays them to look out for illegal logging, preventing more deforestation
