Tropical Rainforests Flashcards
(18 cards)
Describe the climate in tropical rainforests.
High rainfall, high temperatures, hot and humid atmosphere, consistent all year round.
Describe the soil in tropical rainforests.
Not very fertile, a thin layer of fertile soil is at the surface where dead leaves decompose, rich in iron, the nutrients are quickly washed out.
What 4 layers make up a tropical rainforest? (bottom to top)
- Shrub layer.
- Under canopy.
- Canopy.
- Emergent layer.
What 2 adaptations do tree trunks have in tropical rainforests?
- Tall and thin to allow trees to reach the sunlight.
- Smooth bark to allow water to flow down to the roots easily.
What adaptation do plants have in tropical rainforests?
Drip tips, to allow water to run off the leaves quickly without damaging or breaking them.
What are drip tips?
Leaves with pointy tips
What adaptation do tree roots have in tropical rainforests?
Buttress roots, create a large surface area to support large trees.
Name 4 animals in tropical rainforests that have adaptations.
- Sloths.
- Spider monkey.
- Flying frogs.
- Toucans.
What 2 adaptations do sloths have?
- Camouflage.
- Move very slowly.
What adaptation do spider monkeys have?
Long, strong limbs, to help climb through trees.
What adaptation do flying frogs have?
Fully webbed hands and feet, to help glide from plant to plant.
What adaptation do toucans have?
Long, large beak, to reach and cut fruit.
Name 5 causes of deforestation.
- Farming.
- Logging.
- Mining.

- Climate change.
- Economic development.
Name the 4 main sustainable management strategies of tropical rainforests.
- Logging and replanting.
- Education.
- Eco-tourism.

What is the case study for tropical rainforests?
The Malaysian Rainforest
Name 6 sustainable management strategies that are used in Malaysia.
- Education.
- Use of alternative timber, such as rubber trees.
- Selective logging.
- Eco-tourism.
- Permanent Forest Estates.
- Creation of national parks.
What are Permanent Forest Estates?
Areas where no change of land use is allowed, created by the government.
