Tropical Rainforests Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the climate?
Temperature is usually 20-28 degrees celsius
Rainfall is around 2000mm per year
What is the soil like?
The soil is not very fertile because the rainfall removes the nutrients away.
Nutrients occur from decayed leaf fall.
Layer is thin as decay is fast as of the warm moist conditions
What are the plants like?
Many of the trees are extremely tall meaning the vegetation cover is dense
What is an epiphyte?
Plants that grow on other living trees and take the nutrients and moisture from around them
Give an example of an epiphyte
Orchids
Give a definition of the animals appearance
Loads of the species are brightly coloured and make a lot of noise as well
Give three examples of animals that are in the tropical rainforest
Jaguars
Tree frogs
Sloths
What do people do who live there?
Hunt
Fish
Gather nuts and berries
They also grow vegetables in small garden plots
Is a rainforest an interdependent ecosystem?
Yes
Name an adaptation that plants have made to survive in the rainforest?
Plants have thick, waxy leaves with pointed tips (called drip-tip leaves) to channel the water off the plant and let it gently hit the forest floor
Name an adaption animals have made to survive in the rainforest?
Some animals can camouflage themselves into surroundings to hide from predators
Is a rainforest a high or low biodiversity?
Very high biodiversity
What is population pressure?
Population increases in the area meaning trees being cut down increases to make new land settlements
What is mineral extraction?
Minerals are mined and sold to other people to make money
Name a mineral that is extracted from the ground
Gold
Or
Iron ore
What is energy development?
Dams are built to help generate hydro-electric power floods
Commercial logging?
Trees are felled to help make money
Definition of commercial farming
Forest gets cleared to make space for cattle grazing
Or even for huge palm oil or soya plantations
What is subsistence farming uses for?
Cleared so that farmers can then grow food for themselves and their family too
Where is the main place that deforestation is a major problem?
Amazon rainforest
