Building Construction
What are the five types of building construction?
Give example of each type.
Describe effects of fire on each type.
1) Fire Resistive - Noncombustible
- concrete and protected steel (steel coated with fire resistant material.
2) Non combustible
3) Ordinary
- Non combustible walls and a wood roof.
- ex - reinforced masonry or tilt slab with lightweight roof.
4) Heavy Timber
5) Wood framed
What is a Beam
What is a girder
A structural element that primarily resists loads applied laterally to the beams axis. A horizontal member spanning an opening and carrying a load.
-ex lintel, joist, roof joist, girder
Girder- large beam carrying the ends of other beams perpendicular to them.
What is a column
A structural element that transmits through compression, the weight of the structure above to other structural elements below.
What is an arch
A vertical curved structure that spans a space that may or may not support the weight above it.
What are trusses in building construction.
A structural member that forms a series of triangles lying in a single plain. An engineered system that uses each piece together to create the strength of the system.
What is a space Frame
A space frame is a rigid, lightweight, truss like structure constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric pattern.
What are rafters.
One of a series of sloped structural members that extend from the ridge or hip to the wall plate, downslope perimeter, or eave, and that are designed to support the roof deck and its loads.
What are joists
A horizontal structural member used in framing to span an open space, often between beans that transfer loads to vertical members.
Most common materials used for building construction.
Wood Steel Concrete Aluminum Stone- Masonry Glass
3 Categories of Roofs
Flat
Pitched
Arched
List and Descrive 9 Roof types
Shed Flat Gable Butterfly Sawtooth Mansard Hip Gambrel
Explain difference between conventional and lightweight construction.
Conventional is usually 2x6 or larger members. Strength is formed by size of wood. Use of ridge board in roof
Lightweight -trusses geometry used for strength.

-Gets name from curved shape of top chord. Arched top chord flat bottom chord.
