Truckie Flashcards
(12 cards)
Priority of rescue
1.) Those most severely threatened by fire conditions
2.) Largest groups of people
3.) People in the exposure area
Uses of the aerial ladder
Rescue
Exposure protection
Ventilation
Elevated streams
What is the first priority of the aerial on the fire scene
Rescue people on upper floors
(Aerial should be second choice if interior stairs is a possibility)
Considerations for positioning the truck
A. Whether immediate rescue is apparent; or
B. Where no immediate rescue effort is required, the size of the frontage of the building to be covered in case of
future need; or
C. Smoke, heat or fire causing an exposure that would endanger a victim, a member or the ladder; or
D. Area or street conditions that might hamper optimum positioning.
E. Be mindful of wires and trees
How far should you position the apparatus from the building for a good climbing angle?
25 to 35 feet
How should controls be operated
Operate controls slowly from right to left (raise, rotation, extension)
In order to facilitate an efficient, coordinated operation, the Officer of the Truck Company should strive to
Enter the block after the first due engine company in the same direction
Ladder in a rescue situation should be sighted
In the middle of the window and lowered into position to prevent people from jumping
Recommended distance of the tip from the objective is 8” to 10”
Generally, the preferential order for removal of people is via:
INTERIOR STAIRS
HORIZONTAL EXITS
FIRE ESCAPES (be mindful of their condition)
LADDERS
AERIAL PLATFORMS AND LIFE SAVING ROPE.)
When an aerial ladder has been committed to a roof position and is the only safe egress from that roof,
It should not be removed unless absolutely necessary
Reasons for laddering the roof
A. The fire building is isolated and roof ventilation is required.
B. Other means of access to the roof of fire building are unavailable or cut off and roof operations are evident whether for
ventilation or rescue.
C. As a means of escape for operating force or civilian(s)
guided by member(s).
D. Any other situation where its use would significantly
improve operations.
When laddering the roof position the ladder
With the tip 5 rings above where it comes into contact with the building
( so it’s easier to find in Smokey conditions and to make it easier for egress and removal of victims)
