Backed the french during the Indochina war, covering 78% of French costs
By mid 1954, washington had invested almost $3 billion in ‘saving’ Indochina from communism

Many welfare changes were brought in - social security act, 1950 extended the coverage of welfare (10.5 million more people were covered because of it)

What were Trumans political problems?
Lost the house and senate in 1946 which would mean a divided gov and therefore political gridlock
Divisions in the democratic part over his policies
Thurmond and dixiecrats didn’t like the desegregation of the army
Wallace didn’t think the party was left enough
McCarthy was a senator –> called out 205 gov workers in Feb 1950
What social problems did Truman face?
Second red scare - McCarthyism
Ten workers and directors had to testify before HUAC

What was Trumans actions for civil rights movement?
EO 9808 - Sets up presidential committee on civil rights (5 members, interracial)
Gives speech to the NAACP in June 1947 (First president to make a speech in support of AA’s rights)
Feb 2nd 1948 - Sends the first comprehensive civil rights bill to congress. It has many of the 35 recommendations from the committee
1948 - EO 9981 desegregation of the army
EO 9980 Desegregation of the federal government
What was the double V campaign?
Victory abroad against Nazis, Victory at home against racism and discrimination in the US

A voting right which allowed African Americans in Texas to vote in Primaris
What did the 1946 Morgan V. Virginia court case rule?
A ruling that declared segregation on interstate busses as illegal

Ruled tha estate agents could not refuse to show or sell houses to black citizens
What did the 1950 McLaurin V. Oklahoma state court case rule?
George McLaurin would be the first black student to attend Oklahoma uni (Although he was segregated outside the classroom)
What did the 1950 Sweatt V. Painter court case rule?
Rules that ‘separate but equal’ law school for Heman sweatt was not equal to the white university of Texas law school
