how does CORE’s journey of reconciliation in 1947 link to morgan v virginia?
- action taken, significance and result
- after morgan v virginia, segregation on interstate buses was illegal but many companies decided to ignore it. CORE wanted to bring attention to this
- action: 8 black and 8 white activists planned to travel by bus between northern and southern states, they sat in the wrongly designated seats
- significance: proved companies were ignoring the ruling but resulted in 12 CORE members being arrested. groundbreaking link between legal campaign + protest
- ultimately failed, southern states such as NC did not desegregate buses
what is the significance of sweatt v painter in 1950?
it was the NAACP’s first successful challenge to segregation in education and the idea of “separate but equal” segregation
