Tsunamis Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is a tsunami?
Displacement of a large amount of water from its equilibrium state
As a result of mass movement, an earthquake or a volcanic eruption
Where do they occur?
At plate margins
Ground deformation at dip-slip faults at subduction zones
How are tsunamis generated?
123
What are tsunami-earthquakes?
large tsunamis formed from small earthquakes as a result of low-frequency seismic energy, hard to detect (Sugioka et al, 2012)
Describe a tsunami in terms of its features
Crest is to top of the wave
Wavelength is the distance between crests
Wave height is the vertical distance from crest to trough
Run-up height is the maximum height the wave reaches inland
What us the difference between Distant and Local Tsunamis?

How are tsunamis minimised?
