Q

How would you describe Winnie’s life at the beginning of the book? How come?

A

At the beginning of the book, Winnie’s life can be described as lonely and isolating. These two descriptions are suitable because her mother and grandmother are constantly trying to shelter her in order to protect to protect her, therefore, they never let her leave the house. Winnie then spent most of her time alone and becomes friends with the toad who lives outside of her house.

Q

What are some examples of things that may occur due to others discovering the Tuck’s Secret? Make 2-3 inferences.

A

One inference that can be made about what could possibly happen as a result of others discovering the Tuck’s secret is that they may try to use the spring water for their own personal gain. For example, they may try to obtain the spring water and sell it in order to make money. Another inference maybe that people may become immortal, and regret their decision later in life, similar to Angus Tuck and Miles. Lastly, people with bad intentions may take advantage of the Tuck’s by performing science experiments on them or harming them in some way.

Q

What is the best adjective to describe the Man in the Yellow suit? What evidence do we have from the story?

A

The best adjective to describe the Man in the Yellow Suit is manipulative. The evidence of the story that supports this is how he went to the Foster’s house to tell them that he would tell where Winnie was if they sold him their land, which would give him the spring. (Notes: You may provide one alternate character trait as long as it is backed up with a specific detail from the text)

Q

What is the connection between the man and the yellow suit and the Tuck’s?

A

The Man in the Yellow Suit knows so much about the Tuck’s because when he was a child, Miles’s ex-wife who had left him came to live with him and his grandmother. Miles’s ex-wife would then tell stories of the Tuck’s, which eventually led to the Man in the Yellow suits obsession with them.

Q

How do we see a parallel during the jailbreak?

A

We see a parallel during the jailbreak because the thunder and lightning mimic (mirror) the actions during the jailbreak. For example, when they finally get to the window off, thunder strikes, and this also helps to cover the sounds of them breaking her out. (Note: There are many specific examples of the actions and thunder events in the store - you may provide any one of those examples).

Q

How were both of the stories conflicts resolved by the end?

A

The first conflict was resolved when Mae Tuck hit the man in the yellow suit in the head in order to defend themselves and Winnie, and therefore prevented him from stealing the spring water and exposing their secret. The second conflict was resolved when her family finally found her, and when he came back to live with them, but then decided to stay mortal.
