Turning Forces Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a moment in physics?
The turning effect of a force around a pivot.
Unit: Newton-metres (Nm)
What is the formula for calculating moment?
Moment = Force × Distance from pivot
What is a pivot (fulcrum)?
The fixed point around which an object turns.
What is the centre of mass?
The point where the weight of an object is considered to act.
What is equilibrium in the context of forces?
When the moments on both sides of a pivot are equal, the object remains balanced.
How does increasing the distance from the pivot affect the moment?
It increases the moment.
Calculate the moment if a force of 20N is applied at a distance of 0.5m from a pivot.
Moment = 20N × 0.5m = 10Nm
Why is the centre of mass important in balancing an object?
It determines the stability of the object.
What happens if the centre of mass is not above the pivot?
The object will topple or become unbalanced.
What causes gas pressure?
Gas pressure is caused by particles colliding with surfaces.
What is the formula for calculating pressure in gases?
Pressure = Force / Area
