How did Rosso di Montalcino come about?
Many small farmers that turned to Brunello production didn’t have a lot of equipments nor funds to buy barrels. On top of that, the sacrifice of waiting four years or more before being able to sell their Brunellos seems an impossible dream. Also, many of these new growers had to wait for their newly planted Brunello vines to reach maturity before they can produce berries with enough concentration to meet BdM’s minimum alcohol. All this led to the Consorzio allowing for a second wine to be produced without having to follow the strict DOCG regulations. It was Tancredi Biondi Santi that suggested the name Rosso di Montalcino to avoid bringing negative criticism to Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.
Who are John & Harry Mariani?
What was their effect to Brunello di Montecino?
They are the founders of Castello Banfi, who in 1978 came to Montalcino and taught many natives, a thing or two about modern wine making. Later they founded the most advanced colonial research. Their investment in Montecino saved the denomination from oblivion.
Define Governo all’usso.
“Governo all’Uso Toscano” is a traditional Tuscan winemaking technique, particularly used in the Chianti region, involving the addition of dried grapes to the main fermentation process to enhance the wine’s sweetness, body, and roundness. This technique helps to complete fermentation, stabilize the wine, and add a unique flavor profile characterized by ripe fruit and spice notes.
