Types and explanations Flashcards
3 types of conformity
Identified by Kelman
1. internalisation - conforms publicly and privately, internalised and accepted.
2. identification - conforms publicly swell as privately as they have identified with the group and feel a sense of group membership, change is temporary
3. compliance - conforms publicly but continues to disagree privately, shallowest form.
2 reasons why we conform
- Normative social influence - agree with a group of people because of a need for social approval
- Informational social influence - when you agree with a group as you are unsure on the situation
Research to support the explanations
Normative - hotel guests exposed to sign saying ‘75% of guests reuse their own towels rather than a fresh one’ reduced towel usage by 25%. This supports the ex. that people do change to fit in.
ASCH - interviewed P and said they were afraid to give correct answer. Wrote answers on their own conformity fell to 12.5%
However, does not predict conformity, McGhee and Teevan coined nAffiliators, students who were these were more likley to conform, conformity unpredictable subjective.
Informational - judgement of candidate performance in the US presidential debate could be influenced by the knowledge of others reactions to candidate speeches during debate. This produced a large shift in participants views on each candidate because they thought that the other group of participants were right.
