Types of Cell Death Flashcards
(13 cards)
SUMO Meaning
Size, uptake, membrane organelles
Size of Cell in Necrosis
Many cells swell in size
Size of cell in Apoptosis
A specific cell will shrink
Uptake of cell in Necrosis
Macrophages ingest contents
Significant inflammation. (surrounding area cells can be killed too)
Uptake of cell in Apoptosis
Neighbouring cells ingest contents.
No inflammation.
Membrane in Necrosis
Integrity is lost. Lysis occurs.
Membrane in Apoptosis
Integrity is maintained but blebbing occurs.
Formation of apoptotic bodies.
Organelles in Necrosis
Generally swell and lysosomes leak.
Nucleus and DNA suffer random DNA degradation.
Organelles in Apoptosis
Generally mitochondria release pro apoptotic proteins.
Nucleus and DNA suffers chromatin condensation and non-random DNA degradation .
When does apoptosis occur?
Programmed cell death occurs to cells that are no longer needed or are deemed a threat to the organism e.g. T lymphocytes undergo apoptosis at end of immune response.
When does necrosis occur?
Results of chemical toxicity
Too much oxygen
Apoptosis other Hallmark
Disassembly of cytoskeleton and nuclear lamina.
Can be intrinsic signalling or extrinsic.
Necrosis other hallmark
Decreased ATP
