nuclear family
two generational, one adult male and one adult female with dependant offspring

Women are centre of the family. Squire (2003) found they consist of women and her dependant children
Agustus (1999) - matrifocal families
some black men delibratly have lots of children with lots of women as a symbol of their masculinity. he claims these men for their mothers or children. this view has been critisised for stereotyping black men

both adults previously married / step family
Dual -Career
both parents employed and in paid work. income is essential to quality of living

couple lives together but arent legally married, nubile - before marrige co-habitation
