Types of fossils Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is a fossil?
A preserved REMINANT, IMPRESSION or TRACE of an organism from a past geological age
What is a preserved remains fossil?
Provide 3 examples it can occur in, and define it
type of fossil where the actual remains of an organism are preserved in a **relatively unaltered state. **
Preservation oft include soft tissue which lost in other types o fossils
usually found in environments that inhibit decay and decomposition
What is a trace fossil? (ICHNOFOSSIL)
capture the activity of ancient organisms, such as footprints, burrows, coprolites (fossilized excrement), and feeding marks.
They provide insights into the behavior and movement of the organisms
What is a MOULD/CAST fossil?
Molds are formed when an organism is buried in sediment and then decays, leaving an empty space in the shape of the organism.
THEN:::::: A cast forms if this space later fills with minerals or other sediments, creating a replica of the original organism.
what is a PETRIFIED fossil
a type of fossil where the organic material of an organism is gradually replaced by minerals, turning it into stone while preserving its original structure in detail.
what is a carbon film fossil
fossils form when an organism is compressed by layers of sediment, leaving a carbon imprint on the rock.
revealing surface features and sometimes even cellular structures
Body Fossils
actual physical remains of an organism, such as bones, teeth, shells, and leaves
provide direct evidence of the form and structure of the ancient life
