Types of long-term memory Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the 3 types of long-term memory?
Semantic, episodic and procedural
Where are semantic memories stored?
In the neocortex (frontal cortex). The temporal lobe plays a role in their creation
Where are episodic memories stored?
In the hippocampus - some people believe they are only stored in the hippocampus for a short period of time and they then move to the neocortex
Where are procedural memories stored?
In the cerebellum and motor cortex
What did Tulving propose?
He realised that the multi-store memory model’s view of long term memory was too simplistic and flexible. Tulving proposed that there are in fact three LTM stores, containing quite different types of information
What is episodic memory?
Episodic memory refers to our ability to recall events (episodes) from our lives. This has been likened to a diary, a record of daily happenings.
What is semantic memory?
This store contains our knowledge of the world. This includes facts, but in the broadest possible sense. This type of memory has often been likened to a combination of an encyclopaedia and a dictionary.
What is procedural memory?
This is our memory for actions, or skills, or basically how we do things. We can recall these memories without conscious awareness or a great deal of effort. A good example is driving a car.
Are episodic memories time-stamped?
Yes, you remember when they happened
Why are episodic memories complex?
- Time-stamped
- Single episodes will include several elements
- You have to make a conscious effort to recall them
Are semantic memories time-stamped?
No, we don’t usually remember when we first learned about animal, for example
What are 3 evaluation points of types of LTM?
- Clinical evidence
- Neuroimaging evidence
- Real-life applications
