6
Q
What are the three types and what are they apart of in LTM?
A
Explicit = Episodic and Semantic
Implicit = Procedural
7
Q
What is Episodic memory?
A
- Refers to our ability to recall events from our lives.
- Memories are complex.
- They are ‘time stamped’ = you remember when they happened
- Your memory of a single episode will include several elements {place, people, objects, emotions} and are all interwoven into a single memory.
- You have to make a conscious effort to recall memories
8
Q
What is Semantic memory?
A
- Refers to our knowledge of the world.
- Knowledge is shared by everyone {facts}
- This type of memory has often been linked to encyclopedias and dictionaries.
- Refers to knowledge of meaning
- Generally begin as episodic memories because we acquire personal memories from personal experience.
- Gradual transition from episodic to semantic as memory loses its association to a particular event.
9
Q
What is Procedural memory?
A
- Refers to our memory for actions or skills {knowing how to tie a shoelace}
- Typically acquired through repetition and [practice.
- We recall these memories automatically {riding a car and knowing when to change the gears}
