Types of reactions. Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a synthesis reaction?
When two or more reactants combine to make a single product. Example: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
What is a decomposition reaction?
When a single reactant breaks down into two or more products. Example: 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂
What is a Displacement reaction?
When a single element replaces another element in a compound. Example: Zn + CuCl₂ → ZnCl₂ + Cu
Or when two compounds exchange ions to form two new compounds. Example: AgNO₃ + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO₃
What is a combustion reaction?
When a substance reacts rapidly with an oxidant, usually oxygen, to produce heat or light. Example: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
What is a neutralisation reaction?
An acid and a base react to produce a salt and water. Example: NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H₂O
What is a redox reaction?
A reaction which involves the transfer of electrons. Example: Zn + 2H⁺ → Zn²⁺ + H₂
What is an addition reaction?
When atoms are added to a compound containing a double or triple bond.
