What is an extreme long shot?
Shot taken from a large distance which will often be a view of an exterior location.
What is the purpose of an establishing shot?
To show a panoramic view of where the film is set. It provides clues of the film’s genre and setting.
What is a long shot?
Shot taken from a considerable distance which clearly features the main character/characters, but also feature a fair amount of background.
What is the purpose of a long shot?
To show the relationship between the characters and their environment.
What is a medium-long shot?
Shot that focuses on the main part of the characters. The person in the shot usually takes up to 1-2 thirds of a frame, usually getting cut off at their knees.
What is the purpose of a medium-long shot?
To capture movements and gestures such as walking, talking, etc as well as facial expressions. It is also used to establish the location where the action takes place as well as the relationships between the characters in the scene.
What is a midshot?
Shot that shows the upper body of a character, approximately from the waist up. It give characters and their surroundings a similar space on the screen. As neither one dominates, medium shots usually tell viewers to focus equally on characters and their location.
What is the purpose of a midshot?
To capture dialogue or the intimacy between characters and between the characters and the viewers. It allows you to see the facial expressions on the character and gestures along with their settings and the actions surrounding them.
What is a two-shot?
Shot that shows two characters who are not necessarily side-by-side, but are clearly two central characters in a scene.
There may be one character in the foreground and one in the distant background, the depth of field can be adjusted to highlight and draw focus to one element of the image over the other.
What is the purpose of a two-shot?
To indicate the relationship of the characters in the shot: their proximity and the framing of the shot are clear indicators of this.
