Types of Solution (examples) Flashcards
(19 cards)
An example of a solid in solid solution?
Stainless steel (metal alloy) where carbon metal is dissolved in iron
An example of a solid in liquid solution?
Ocean (salt water) where sodium ions are dissolved in H2O
An example of a solid in gas solution?
Mothball where the surface of mothball dissolved into air and creates a solution in the air
An example of a liquid in liquid solution?
Antifreeze where chemicals are mixed with water
An example of a liquid in solid solution?
Wax where liquid materials dissolve in the wax
An example of a liquid in gas solution?
Humidity where water dissolves in the air
An example of a gas in solid solution?
Ice where the solid ice contains air bubbles
An example of a gas in liquid solution?
Pepsi (carbonated drinks) where air is dissolved into the flavoured water
An example of a gas in gas solution?
Fire is a mix of multiple gases (is never a pure substance)
Define “Solubility”
the max amount of a solute that can be dissolved in a solvent (at a specific temp) to create a solution
Define “Soluble”
more than 1g will dissolve in 100mL solvent
Define “slightly soluble”
between 0.1g-1g will dissolve in 100mL solvent
Define “Insoluble”
less than 0.1g will dissolve in 100mL solvent
Define “Saturated Solution”
A solution that CANNOT dissolve more solute than it already has (is at it’s max limit)
Define “Unsaturated Solution”
A solution that CAN dissolve more solute than what it already has (has a bit to begin with)
Define “Supersaturated Solution”
A solution that contains MORE solute THAN IT CAN DISSOLVE when it’s put under heat.
When a solution is heated it can hold onto more solute and when it cools down again will be unstable yet possible chance of it holding onto it.
Define “Solution”
a homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances with UNIFORM COMPOSITION THROUGHOUT
Define “Solvent”
A substance that has another substance DISSOLVED IN IT
Define “Solute”
A substance that DISSOLVES IN a solvent
