Types of Storage Media Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the four main types of storage media?
HDDs, SSDs, ODDs and Magnetic Tape Drives.
What is a hard disk drive (HDDs)
Refers to an electromechanical storage device that storages data on circular disks called platters that coated with magnetic material
How do HDDs record data?
HDDs work via polarization on a small area on the surface of the disk to represent binary code of 1s and 0s
What’s the most common and cheapest storage media?
Hard disk drives
What are solid state drives (SSDs)?
A storage device that uses flash technology to store data. SSDs use semi conductor chips and electricity and has no moving parts like HDDs
What’s the most expensive and more fast type of storage media?
Solid State Drives
What is an Optical Disk Drive (ODD)
A device that uses laser technology to read and write data to optical disks like CDs, DVDs and Blue-Ray Disks.
What are ODDs used for?
A storage device used for long term storage, backup and archiving. Sometimes as an interim solution when migrating data of older legacy storage systems.
What are Magnetic Tape Drives?
A storage device that uses magnetic tape to store and retrieve digital information. One of the the oldest form of storage. Mainly used for long term backup and archival storage
