Greek theatre
•The word drama comes from the Ancient Greek word ‘dran’ meaning ‘to do’
•This was open air
•The Chorus was a key factor of Greek Theatre. They commented on the story, sang, danced and wore masks to help portray characters
•The Chorus performed in the Orchestra
•The ancient Greeks created 3 types of plays: Tragedies, Comedies and Satires
Medieval theatre
•This time period was also known as the ‘dark ages’
•Christian Church disapproved of the theatre
•Plays were performed in the middle of the street, on wagons, in the halls of rich people, or in the round in amphitheatres
•Actors, mostly male, usually wore long, dark robes.
Commedia dell’arte
●Began in Italy
●Did not use scripts
●Improvised scenes
●It is associated with masks
Elizabathen theatre
•William Shakespeare lived and wrote during this period
•one of the most famous theatre of this kind is called The Globe, where some of Shakespeare’s plays were performed
Restoration theatre
•A lot of restoration comedies poked fun at rich people
•Women appeared on stage for the first time
