* Power cut off to affected islands for up to a month
* Survivors fought for food and supplies. 8 people died in a stampede for food supplies.

  • International Government and aid agencies responded quickly with aid wayer and temporary shelters.

  • French, Belgian and Israeli field hospitals set up to help the injured.

  • Aid agencies such as Oxfam supported the replacement of fishing boats, which is a vital source of income
  • ‘Cash for work’ programmes set up, and people were paid to clear debris and rebuild the city.
  • Rebuilding of roads, bridges and airport facilities
  • Rice Farming and fishing re-established. Coconut production will take longer (5 years for trees to grow).
  • More cyclone shelters built to accommodate people evacuated from coastal shelters
  • Thousands of homes have been built away from areas ar risk of flooding.
