What are examples of font families?
Extra light, light, regular, medium, semi bold, bold
What fonts set the mood?
headline because it’s larger
Serif
strokes (feet) on end of characters
Sans serif
without feet, usually monoweight
Script
looks like calligraphy
Modern
has flat serifs that are thin compared to the rest of the letter
Slab serifs
thick slabs sitting horizontally w/o angles, monoweight
Decorative / display
“I’m weird. I’m a weirdo. I don’t fit in.”
Baseline
line where bottom of letterforms rest
Cap height
distance between baseline and top of cap letter
X-height
height of lowercase letters like x
Ascender
part of lowercase letters extending above x-height
Descender
part of lowercase letters descending below x-height
Counter
negative space inside a letter like “o”
Set width
horizontal width in relation to x-height
Text allignment
formatting that determines appearance of whole paragraph
Left aligned
easiest to read
Center aligned
traditional feel in head, not meant for body copies
Right aligned
use w/ heads, subheads, portrait pages, & captions
Justified
block out a space, easy to package elements around
Lyrical
interesting & effective for headlines or opening copy
