U=U Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is HIV?
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that weakens a person’s immune system by infecting and destroying their CD4+ T cells (also known as helper T cells).
Which bodily fluids is HIV transmitted through?
Blood
Semen (including pre-cum)
Vaginal fluid
Rectal fluid
Human milk
HIV stands for
Human Immunodeficiency Virus
What are the 3 stages of progression of untreated HIV?
- acute HIV infection
- clinical latency (chronic HIV)
- advanced immune suppression (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome)
How is HIV diagnosed?
Through blood tests that detect HIV antibodies, antigens, and/or RNA
What are the two main tests for HIV?
- 4th generation enzyme-linked immunoassay
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test/nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT)
How does the 4th generation enzyme linked immunoassay detect HIV?
detects IgM and IgG antibodies to HIV as well as the p24 antigen, a protein component of the virus
How does the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) detect HIV?
detects HIV RNA using molecular methods
What is the window period?
The time between when a person is exposed to HIV and when an HIV test can tell they have HIV
How long is the window period?
varies between 2 weeks and three months
What is viral load?
amount of HIV RNA circulating in the blood;
Define undetectable
viral load <200 copies/mL
What is viral load used for?
monitors response to ART
Define U=U
when a person has an undetectable viral load and continuously adheres to treatment, there is zero risk of transmitting HIV through sex
