What is ‘health?’
- A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
What is ‘wellbeing?’
- Complex combination of all dimensions of health
- Characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, healthy and capable
What are the five dimensions of health and wellbeing?
- Physical
- Mental

- Emotional
What does the term ‘physical health and wellbeing’ refer to?
- Functioning of the body and its systems, including physical capacity to perform daily tasks + activities

- Healthy body weight
- Absence of illness, disease or injury
- Appropriate levels of fitness
What does the term ‘social health and wellbeing’ refer to?
- State and quality of the interactions and relationships that an individual has with other people

- Ability to express feelings in an appropriate way

- Current state of wellbeing relating to a person’s mind/brain and the ability to think and process information

- Low levels of stress and anxiety

What does the term ‘spiritual health and wellbeing’ refer to?
- Can be defined as ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the mind and conscience of human beings

- Peace and hope
- Acting according to values and beliefs
- Developed personal values and beliefs
What are the 9 prerequisites for health?
- Peace: Absence of conflict
- Shelter: Structure that provides protection from outside environment
- Education: Empowers individuals and increases potential future aspirations and pathways
- Food: Required nutrients, food security etc.
- Income: Ability to afford necessities and treats
- Stable ecosystem
- Sustainable resources
- Social justice: Equal rights for all, no matter sex, gender, religion etc.
- Equity: Relates to fairness and social justice (particularly disadvantaged groups)
