U1 AOS 2 - brain regions / lobes / functions Flashcards
(27 cards)
Regions of the brain
Hindbrain, Midbrain, Forebrain
Hindbrain
The link between the spinal
cord and the brain and supports vital bodily functions such as breathing and sleeping.
Structures in the Hindbrain
Cerebellum, Medulla, Pons
Function of the Cerebellum
Co-ordination, balance and voluntary movement
Function of the Medulla
Regulates automatic functions such as breathing, heart rate, digestion and blood pressure.
Function of the Pons
Controls movement,
breathing, sleeping, dreams and waking
Midbrain
Co-ordinated movement,
sleep and arousal
Structure in the Midbrain
Reticular formation
Function of the Reticular formation
Important in the control of
arousal in the sleep/wake cycle, as well as control of muscles
Function of the Forebrain
Upper level structures- higher order thinking processes eg. problem solving and planning
Function of the Hypothalamus
Regulates emotions and ‘instinctive drive.’ as well as body temperature, hunger and thirst.
Function of the Thalamus
‘relay center’ of the brain and functions to regulate arousal, attention and activity.
Function of the Cerebrum
Receives and processes a range of sensory information.
Lobes of the brain
FPOT - frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal
Function of the Frontal Lobe
Important in the planning, sequencing and executing of voluntary motor activity
Function of the Parietal Lobe
Involved in spatial awareness (judging our body’s position in space), spatial reasoning, attention and receiving & processing somatosensory information
Function of the Occipital Lobe
plays a crucial role in vision
Function of the Temporal Lobe
plays a significant role in receiving and processing sounds for the ears, as well as memory and emotional responses to sensory information.
What are the cortices in the brain’s lobes
Motor, somatosensory, visual, auditory
Broca’s Area
located in the frontal lobe and responsible for speech production
Wernicke’s Area
Located in the temporal lobe and responsible for speech comprehension.
Cerebral Cortex
Outer layer of brain – higher
mental processes and
complex behaviors
Corpus Callosum
Connects left and right hemispheres of cerebral cortex
Hippocampus
the hippocampus is involved in memory, learning, and emotion
