U13 - Cancer Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is cancer
The product of the acumulation of DNA mutations and alterations.
Alterations on protooncogenes or tumor suppressor genes are critical.
How do we clasify cancer
Endogenous - Oxidative by products, or inherited
Exogenous - Chemical substances, Physical damage, or oncogenic virus
What is a protooncogene
A regular cell that, if mutated, can transform into an oncoogene. Which can result in cancer
What is a tumor suppresor gene
Genes that avoid uncontrolled cell division and proliferation of damaged cells
Mutations in Somatic Line
Acquired in the organism AFTER conception. Normally only located in the damaged tissue, like lung cancer by smoking
Mutations in Germinal Line
They appear since the sperm or oocyte. Like breast cancer
Examples of Tumor suppresor genes
P53 and RB
