Semiosis
The process of signification in language or literature. It is the process by which something functions as a sign and as part of the production of meaning. The study of meaning-as-use. The way we use language and literature to create meaning in our everyday lives
Effective semiotics
“The investigation of the ways signs have meaning by virtue of their actual uses.” The way we use language and literature to make meaning in our everyday lives. The investigation of how people actually use different forms of communication to make sense of the world and get on in life. It is effective because it is historical or situational
General linguistics
The idea that information is sent from one person and received by another (contrasts with Harris’s integrational linguistics). Examines the diversity of language structures and use in the languages of the world
Meaning-as-use
The concept describes communication as immediately and necessarily historical and material. The way meaning changes according to the practices inside which meaning is taken up. The meaningful use of language in the context of everyday life. Referents and historical conditions provide a basis and context. Choosing one or more aspects out of a complex situation to connect to a particular aspect of meaning.
Space of the effective
Space contributes to the meanings of those messages without being obvious about its role in constructing meaning. There is history in the space of the effective. A larger reading of the culture in which it was created and to the more universal structures that are inherent within it
