Successful Polish protest in Poland inspired the Hungarians

Protest began in Budapest on the 22nd of October stating demands of withdraw of troops and multiparty elections and freedom of speech
- AVO fired shorts at protestant and a man Nagi was appointed the prime minister and promised crucial if he can control the situation
-Nagi then stated withdraw from the Warsaw Pact and abolition of the AVO and multiparty

Explain the events of the solidarity crisis 1980
• August 1980: massive strikes began at Gdansk Shipyard led by Lech Wałęsa.
• Workers formed an independent trade union: Solidarity (Solidarność).
• Solidarity grew rapidly:
• Over 10 million members (about 1/3 of Polish workers).
• First legal independent union in Communist Eastern Europe.
• Demanded:
• Free trade unions.
• Better wages.
• Freedom of speech.
• Political reform.
• Polish government (under General Jaruzelski) under pressure from USSR.
