U9 Flashcards
(64 cards)
What 2 things do the testes produce?
- sperm 2. sex hormones
Where is the actual site for spermatogenesis?
seminiferous tubules
What secretes testosterone?
Interstitial cells
What is spermatogenesis?
sperm development
What are spermatagonia?
undifferentiated cells that sperm cells are derived from. they divide mitotically
How are primary spermatocytes formed?
spermatogonia move away from the outer wall to increase in size
What do primary spermatocytes turn into?
secondary spermatocytes
How many chromosomes do primary spermatocytes vs secondary soermatocytes have?
- 23.
How do the chromosomes between secondary spermatocytes and spermatids differ?
They both have 23 but spermatocytes have 2 chromatids and spermatids have 1
What supports, nourishes and regulates sperm cells?
sertoli cells
What is the function of the epididymis?
stores sperm and makes them able to swim
What is the purpose of seminal vesicle?
contributes to seminal fluid
What is the function of the Cowper’s gland?
contributes to seminal fluid
What happens if an older man’s prostate enlarges?
It can become painful to urinate and surgery may be needed to fix it
What is the function of the urethra?
Conducts sperm and urine out of the body
What is the function of the Vas Deferens?
Conducts and stores sperm coming from the testes and conducts to the urethra
What is the function of the penis?
serves as an organ for copulation
Explain the 6 steps of a sperm cell being formed to ejaculation
- Sperm formed in seminiferous tubules of testes 2. Sperm matures and is stored in the epididymus 3. transported to and stored in vas deferans 4. enters urethra 5. prostate, cowper’s gland, and seminal vesicle add secretions to semes 6. semen and sperm exit through the penis
What are the 2 sources of seminal fluid?
cowper’s gland, seminal vesicle, and prostate gland
What does the seminal fluid provide?
- maintains pH at 7.5
- fructose for energy for the sperm
- prostalglandins = chemicals which cause utreter to contract
- Aids sperm movement
5.Lubrication
Sperm head has what place to hold enzyme? why?
Acrosome holds a type of lysosome, Breaks down part of egg membrane so that sperm can penetrate
What does the middle of sperm contain and why?
mitocohondia; for energy
What is the sperm tail used for?
locomotion
What part of the brain tells the testes to produce sperm?
the pituitary gland
