UCM Operations Flashcards
(54 cards)
What is the first precaution to take when starting an engine in cold weather?
Follow any cold weather starting procedures as described in the POH.
What causes frosted spark plugs in cold weather?
Water has condensed and frozen on the tip of the spark plug.
What should you do if the engine fires and then dies in below freezing conditions?
Wait five minutes and try starting again.
Why should excessive cranking be avoided?
It causes the starter to overheat and drains the battery.
What is the maximum cranking duration for each start attempt?
No more than 10 seconds.
What should you do if the engine does not start after three attempts?
There should be a two minute cooling period to avoid damage to the starter.
What is the recommended idle RPM range for warming up the engine after a cold start?
Between 800 - 1,000 RPM.
How long should the engine idle to warm up during cold weather operations?
For 2 to 5 minutes.
When is it recommended to use a sump heater?
It is recommended to use a sump heater when air temperatures are below 40°F.
When is the use of the sump heater or preheat required?
The use of the sump heater or preheat is required when air temperatures are below 20°F, for the first flight of the day and thereafter if it’s been two hours since the last flight.
What should not be used on UCM aircraft for deicing?
Absolutely no ice scrapers will be used on UCM aircraft.
What tool should be used to remove snow from metal surfaces?
Use the soft bristle broom on metal surfaces only to remove snow.
How to remove snow/ice from windshield
Rub windshield with soft rags only in a vertical motion.
When should winter kits be removed?
Above 30°F/-1°C – winter kits OFF.
When should winter kits be installed ?
From 20°F/-7°C and below – winter kits ON.
What should be done with winter kits between 20°F/-7°C and 30°F/-1°C ?
If the weather kits are on, leave them on.
If the weather kits are off, leave them off.
What is the minimum altitude for flights over Warrensburg?
No flight over Warrensburg at less than 3,000 AGL is allowed.
What is the minimum altitude to be observed at all times?
Minimum altitudes of 500 ft AGL will be observed at all times, except during takeoff and landing at approved airports.
What regulations must all UCM aircraft follow regarding right of way?
All UCM aircraft must follow FAR 91.113 in regards to right of way rules.
What is the minimum horizontal and vertical distance UCM aircraft must maintain from other aircraft?
No intentional maneuvering of a UCM aircraft to any other aircraft within 2,000’ horizontally and 500’ vertically.
Is formation flying allowed for UCM aircraft?
No formation flying of UCM aircraft is allowed, planned or otherwise.
What is required prior to performing each maneuver?
Clearing turns are required prior to performing each maneuver.
What frequency should aircraft conducting training outside of the traffic pattern contact for traffic advisories?
Aircraft conducting training outside of the traffic pattern will contact Whiteman Approach on 127.45 MHz for traffic advisories and VFR flight following.
What is the climb procedure for departing aircraft?
All departing aircraft will climb at VY until reaching 3,000 ft MSL or 3 NM from Skyhaven, whichever occurs first.
