How do aircraft get from their departure airfield to their destination?

Navigational beacons, reporting points and airways (motorways in the sky)

How is the airspace divided up?

Blocks called Sectors. Each sector is manned by an air traffic controller.

How does an aircraft transfer between sectors?

An ATC will advise the frequency for the next sector.
