A

1960s Cardroom estate built in Manchester, replaced old cramped terraces that housed factory workers.

Mid 1990s the estate run down, bad reputation 50% of houses empty/ squats.

Economic/social problems
High unemployment, joyriding, burglary, drug problems, graffiti, vandalism.

What were the actions to regenerate New Islington

A

Government regeneration agency/ private companies/ local residents improved the area- renamed New Islington

1700 new homes built
new tram stop- improved transport links

New community facilities- health centre, village hall, restaurants/cafes.

Provided orchard, eco park, community football pitch.
