UK Physical Landscape Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the three main types of rocks?
SEDIMENTARY - formed by the accumulation of mineral organic particles of the Earth surface followed by cementation
Sandstone limestone, chalk
IGNEOUS - formed as a result of volcanic activity when magma lava forming rocks made of crystals which are usually hard
Granite basalt
METAMORPHIC - formed from other rocks change by extreme pressure and/or heat are often very hard
Slate, schists
What are some characteristics of sedimentary rocks?
- They usually have layers
- Often contain fossils
- Have a great variety in colour
- Are made of particles that may be the same size or may vary
What are the characteristics of igneous rocks?
- Are very resistant
- do not contain fossils
- Formed from molten rock magma
- Are made from randomly arranged crystals
What does the characteristics of metamorphic rocks?
- Can contain fossils or fossils are usually squeezed as a shape for example
- Are formed under a great pressure or heat
- Have crystals which be ranged in layers for example slate
- Are formed from other rocks either igneous or sedimentary
How are tors formed
- originally granite batholiths, batholiths are areas of molten rock that has cooled slowly within the crust which creates a rock with large crystals
- material above batholith was weathered and removed, this means there was a reduction of pressure on the granite and this caused it to crack and create joints and bedding planes
- the main form of weathering is freeze thaw
- process continued over millions of years and overlying material was completely removed and this leaves tors and valleys
Advantages of forestry and agriculture in a UK landscape
- An agriculture advantage is the income generated from farming as it supports the local business agriculture businesses account for approximately 6% of the employment in parks
- An agriculture advantage is farming has contributed towards supporting rare bad species in particular places
- A forestry advantage is a large percentage of the wood that makes up particular places is made up with an ancient tree which provide habitats for a diverse range of wild wildlife
- Advantage of forestry is the timber Halstead from certain parks is a valuable sustainable product with growing markets in construction and fill for heating
Disadvantages of forestry and agriculture in a uk landscape
- A disadvantage in agriculture is farming and changing and following practices have reduced presence of plants which is damaged wildlife habitats
- A disadvantage in agriculture is that has been a significant car and chalk grassland from these of chemicals in farming
- A disadvantage in forestry is the removal of woodland for developments as some of the ancient large leaves line woodland
- A disadvantage of forestry is many of the haze on Chestnut coppices are under threat because people no longer manage them in the traditional way as they become overgrown so the quality of the woodland and the biodiversity declines
