What is rural area like
Areas of low population density (few people live and space between houses can be large)
Rural population characteristics
-Large proportion of population over 50 (retirement)
-those not retired tend to work in agriculture or tourism
-small number of family’s as couples move after kids move out called (empty nesters)
Rural housing
Typically detached cottages or barn conversions
Few housing developments as not many people move to rural
What’s urban area like
High population density (high pop in city around centre)
-houses are built close together or stacked eg flats
Urban population characteristics
-most population working age (20-40)
-many families live on periphery of city centre (urban areas have best access to services)
-work in mostly offices, manufacturing industry
Urban housing
Terraced or apartments as limited free space
(Many new housing developments under construction)
Why does government encourage people to move to urban areas and why are business in urban areas
Grow and develop economy
-businesses set up as large market of customers and opportunities for international trade
