Ultrasound Guided Techniques Flashcards
(24 cards)
surgical puncture of the chest wall for removal of fluids; usually done by using a large-bore needle.
Thoracentesis
biopsy performed without the use of a needle guide on the transducer
Free hand technique
lab test used to evaluate for blood clotting abnormalities; the time it takes the blood to clot after thromboplastin and calcium are added to the sample; PT.
Prothrombin time
prevents the formation of blood clots; used as treatment for deep vein thrombosis. (not brand name)
Warfarin
any substance that causes your immune system to produce antibodies against it
antigen
diminished blood volume
Hypovolemia
a defect in the body’s mechanism for blood clotting; clotting disorder
Coagulopathy
concerning the action of stimuli from the vagus nerve on blood vessels; vasovagal syncope is a brief loss of consciousness caused by a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, which reduces blood flow to the brain.
Vasovagal response
a complication that can occur after cardiac catheterization or angioplasty in which a pocket of blood is formed that has a connection to the artery (neck) that allows blood to continually flow into the pocket (intervention required to correct)
Pseudoaneurysm
anticoagulant (blood thinner); brand name Coumadin
Antiplatelet drugs
method developed to standardize prothrombin time (PT) results among laboratories by accounting for the different thromboplastin reagents used to determine PT.
International normalized ratio
collection of air or gas in the pleural cavity
Pneumothorax
a procedure that uses a small needle attached to a syringe; a vacuum is created and sample cells are aspirated for evaluation
fine needle aspiration
procedure that uses a hollow core needle to remove a sample of tissue.
Core biopsy
class of drugs that work to prevent clotting of the blood; aspirin is an example
Anticoagulant
a condition or factor that serve as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient
Contraindication
laboratory test that measures levels of this antigen in the body; elevate levels could indicate prostate cancer
Prostate specific antigen test
procedure to remove ascites
Paracentesis
ultrasound equipment that has the ability to import scans from other modalities such as CT and MRI to do a side-by-side comparison with the ultrasound image. By selecting a common reference point, real time imaging can be performed simultaneously with the ultrasound corresponding with the same anatomy of the imported exam
Fusion Ultrasound
laboratory test that can be used to evaluate for blood clotting abnormalities and for the effects of heparin; known as PTT.
Partial thromboplatin time
sample of a patient’s tissue, fluid, or other material derived from the patient used for laboratory analysis to assist differential diagnosis or staging of a disease process.
Biopsy
removal of infected fluid such as pus; usually performed when antibiotics do not change patient’s symptoms.
Abscess drainage
a branch of pathology that studies and diagnoses diseases on the cellular level
Cytopathology
a form of blood plasma that contains all of the clotting factors except platelets that is used to treat patients with coagulopathy prior to interventional procedures
Fresh frozen plasma
