Q

ultraviolet waves

A
  • found in security marker pens, ink that glows in ultraviolet light
  • these chemicals absorb ultraviolet waves and then emit visible light waves

Q

why are ultra violet waves dangerous and what can we do to prevent it

A
  • too much iv from the sun directly or a sunbed can cause sunburn and skin cancer

-if you stay outdoors use skin creams to block UV waves
- if you use a sunbed don’t go over recommended time and use special goggles

Q

what are the similar properties of gamma rays and x-rays

A
  • are at short wave-length end of electromagnetic spectrum

-carry much more energy per second than longer wavelength electromagnetic waves

Q

what are the differences between gamma ray and x-rays

A

-x-rays are produced when electrons or other particles moving at high speeds are topped - x ray tubes are used to produce x-rays

-gamma rays are produced by radioactive substances when unstable nuclei release energy

-gamma rays have shorter wavelengths than x-rays- so they can penetrate substances more than x-rays can

Q

what do x-rays do

A

-Low-energy X-rays are used for medical and industrial imaging.

-High-energy X-rays are used to treat cancer.

-X-rays are also used for security purposes to
detect weapons in airports (and other places).

6
Q

what do gamma rays do

A

-Gamma rays are also used to sterilize medical instruments and food, killing bacteria and extending shelf life.

-killing cancer cells- doctors use gamma ray therapy to destroy cancerous tumors

Q

what can gamma rays and x rays both do to electrons

A

-knock electrons out of atoms in a substance- the atoms becomes charged because thy loos electrons.
-so x-rays and gamma rays are examples of ionising radiation.

Q

what safety precautions should you take -

A

-if ionisation happened to a living cell - it can damage or kill a cell

-exposure to too much gamma rays and x-rays can cause cancer

-people who us e any equipment or substances that produce any form of ionising radiation must wear a film badge - telling them if the equipment is over exposed with ionising radiation
