Unit 1 1.1-1.3 Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is the definition of structure?
The framework/shape and what something is made of
What is the definition of function?
Purpose/what you use something for and how it works
What is the purpose/how something works called?
Function
What is the framework/shape of something called?
Structure
What is biology?
The study of life
What does the PMC model stand for?
Program, metabolism, and container
What is the study of life?
Biology
What is program, metabolism, and container usually called?
PMC model
What are at least four of the levels of organization?
Atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, biomes, or biosphere
What is an organ system?
A group of organs and tissue working together.
What is population?
A group of the same species that interact.
What is an organism?
Unicellular or multicellular living thing.
What happens if you change the structure of something?
You change the function
What are the characteristics of living things?
Grow, obtain, and use fuel, reproduce, have DNA, and follow the PMC model
What is the difference between population, community, and ecosystem?
The population is the same species interacting, community is all populations in an area, and ecosystem is all community and abiotic factors.
Think of an automobile. What happens when you change the structure? does the function change?
Various answers… if you change the structure/shape of the body, you could change a regular car into a truck. Or a sedan into a coop.
Explain how humans meet every requirement of the PMC model.
Humans have program aka DNA which tells the body what to do and how we are made up. We have metabolism because we burn and use fuel/energy. Humans also have a container because of cells holding the DNA and our shell/skin keeping everything inside.
Explain how all levels of organization relate to one another. From atoms to the biosphere.
Explain.
