Nationalism
Feeling extreme loyalty for one’s own nation over other nations
Trench
A deep hole dug by soldiers and used as a place from which they can attack the enemy while being hidden
Trench foot
A painful condition of the feet caused by exposed constantly in cold water or mud, which result in blackening and death of surface tissue
U-Boat
The German submarines used during WWl, that were armed with torpedoes to sink enemy ships
Canadian Expeditionary Force
The entire overseas force fielded by Canada during WWl

Recruitment
Canadian government conscripting young men for overseas military service
Attestation Papers
Used by CEF for recruitment purposes which contained personal information completed during the enlistment process
Pacifist
Someone who opposes war because they believe disagreements between countries should be settled peacefully
Conscientious Objector
Someone who refuses to fight in a war because of deeply held personal or religious beliefs
Total war
All civilians contributing to the war effort in various ways
Victory bonds
Bonds for Canadians to purchase to afford war expenses
Conscription
the requirement that all men of fighting age join the military and potentially be sent to fight overseas
Internment camp
Where “enemy aliens” were forced to do hard labour for little or no pay
Enemy aliens
Canadians who were originally from “enemy” countries like Germany and Austria-Hungary
Bolshevik
A member of the Russian party that seized power in Russia by the Revolution
Armistice
Agreement to stop fighting
