Unit 1 Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is an Isotope?
Isotopes are elements that have atoms with the same atomic number but different atomic mass numbers.
What are Radioisotopes and some examples?
Isotopes that decay to produce nuclear radiation.
- Iodine-131
- Americium-241
- Cobalt-60
- Carbon-14 & potassium-40
What is Atomic Radius?
- Atomic radius of an atom is the distance from the nucleus to just beyond the outermost electrons
- In a diatomic molecule, the atomic radius is the distance between the two nuclei, divided by 2
What is Effective nuclear charge?
Effective nuclear charge is the net force from electrons in an atom due to the positively charged nucleus.
What is Ionization energy?
Ionization energy is the amount of energy required to move an electron when it’s in the gaseous state.
What is Electron affinity?
Electron affinity is the energy change that occurs when an electrons is accepted by an atom is the gaseous state
What is Electronegativity?
Electronegativity is a scale that describes the ability of an atom to attract electrons when bonded
